How does the technology behind infrared heaters work?

Infrared heating is no longer a niche product and is becoming increasingly popular. But how exactly does this innovative heating system work? In this comprehensive guide, we explain the physical principles, the technical structure, the differences to convection heating and provide practical insights into the development, efficiency and benefits of modern infrared heating systems – especially the Heat4All systems.

What is infrared radiation?

Infrared radiation is part of the electromagnetic spectrum and is located just below visible red light. It is invisible to the human eye, but is perceived as heat. Any material that is warmer than absolute zero emits infrared radiation.

Table: Wavelength ranges of infrared radiation

Designation Wavelength (nm) Application
IR-A 780 – 1.400 Medicine, outdoor areas, lamps
IR-B 1.400 – 3.000 Medicine, industry
IR-C 3.000 – 1.000.000 Infrared heating, living room

Note: Long-wave IR-C radiation is mainly used for infrared heaters, as it is ideal for heating surfaces and people.

Physical principles of infrared heating

In contrast to conventional radiators, which heat air (convection), infrared heaters work according to the principle of heat radiation. The heat spreads out in waves, hits solid objects (walls, furniture, people) and is absorbed there. These slowly release the heat back into the room. The result: an even and pleasant temperature distribution.

  • No air circulation: less dust is stirred up, ideal for allergy sufferers.
  • Direct heat: Like sun rays on the skin.

Technical structure of an infrared heater

Main components (using Heat4All ICONIC as an example):

  • Heating panel: High-quality base material (e.g. carbon, steel, natural stone, glass).
  • Heating conductor: Resistant wires or foils that convert electricity into heat.
  • Insulation layer: Non-combustible insulation material (e.g. rock wool) prevents heat loss to the rear.
  • Front panel: Coated aluminum, safety glass or natural stone – for efficient radiation emission and individual design.
  • Rear panel: Robust sheet steel for stability.

Differences to classic convection heating

Criterion Infrared heating Convection heating
Heat transfer Radiation (IR-C) Heating of the room air
Dust dispersion Minimal High
Heat distribution Even, fast Uneven, warmer at the top
Room climate Pleasant, not dry Often dry, dusty
Energy efficiency Very high Medium
Maintenance Hardly necessary Regularly (e.g. venting)

Mode of action in the room

  • The infrared heater is powered by electricity.
  • The heating conductors heat the front panel.
  • This emits long-wave infrared radiation.
  • Walls, furniture and people absorb the heat and radiate it again.
  • The room air is tempered indirectly by the heated bodies.

Advantage: Surfaces stay warm, mold growth is made more difficult, a feel-good climate is created.

Energy efficiency and ecology

  • Conversion of almost 100% of electrical energy into heat.
  • No mechanical parts, no water, no loss of raw materials.
  • Particularly environmentally friendly in combination with green electricity/PV.
  • Low purchase, installation and maintenance costs (with Heat4All: high-quality workmanship, durable materials, minimal service requirements).

Example calculation of electricity costs (Heat4All Classic model, 400W):

Power output 400 watts
Consumption (1h) 0.4 kWh
Electricity price (€) 0.30 €/kWh
Cost per hour 0,12 €

Note: By heating the surfaces directly, the room temperature can usually be set 2-3 °C lower than with conventional heaters – this saves energy.

Advantages of Heat4All infrared heaters

  • Especially suitable for low-energy or passive houses

Design highlights:

  • Individual picture motifs or art collection
  • RAL colors, surface coatings
  • Frame & Decorative Glass Colors

FAQ: Frequently asked questions

How long does it take to heat up?
Depending on the model and material, 5-15 minutes. Natural stone heaters store heat for a particularly long time.

How many watts do I need per room?
The exact calculation depends on room size, insulation, window areas, etc. Use our heat load calculator or get personal advice.

Is infrared radiation harmful to health?
No, IR-C radiation is absolutely harmless and is also used in medicine.

Can I install the heating myself?
As a rule, yes. Mounting kits are supplied for wall or ceiling mounting. Observe the notes on electrical installation.

Does infrared heating work as main heating?
Yes, especially in well-insulated buildings. Also ideal as additional heating.
